Many researches support as well as oppose the sexual activity in concern with a healthy heart. However a thorough understanding of sex after heart problems will help you to improve your sexual life.

Sex does not increase the chances for heart attack. Sex in general puts pressure on your heart as a brisk walk of 20 minutes does. As you get aroused your breathing rate, heart rate and blood pressure elevate a little. At the same time your skin also gets flushed. As the sexual tension builds, heart rate and blood pressure rises even more. During orgasm you release pent-up tension. The heartbeat increases 90 to 145 per minute. After orgasm your heart rate, breathing rate and blood pressure return to the resting levels. Staistics prove that only one percent of the heart attacks are triggered by sexual activity.

Sex after heart attack or heart surgery can be continued after consulting your doctor. Usually more people resume heart surgery than after heart attack. A heart patient's sexual interests can be affected by his/her age, the length of relationship with the partner and the previous sex drive and pleasure. People who have recovered from heart attack will be more aware of heartbeat, breathing, muscle tightening and tension. If you are not ready to resume sexual intercourse after a heart attack, you can indulge in other sexual activities with your partner. If you do not know whether you are ready to start sex, your doctor can give you an exercise test to check your physical capacity.

Some people have sex less often after a heart attack. It is because, worry of ageing added to heart disease affects their sexual desire. It must be taken into consideration that many medicines for heart problems can affect sexual desire. These medicines include those for blood pressure; fluid pills, tranquilizers, antidepressants and some medications used for chest pain and irregular heartbeats. These medicines may cause inability to maintain an erection in men and frigidity or orgasmic dysfunctions in women.

The psychology of a heart patient affects his sexual life to a large extent. They will be often sad, depressed or afraid. They will feel tired all the time and may suffer from sleeplessness or sleeping too much. They will eat more or less than their pre-heart attack days and as a result will gain or lose the weight.
